What to Include in Your First Aid Kit

A basic first aid kit should contain supplies to treat minor injuries such as cuts, scrapes, burns and splinters. Be sure First Aid Kit include adhesive bandages, gauze pads, rolled gauze bandages, medical tape, antibiotic ointment, pain relievers and thermometer. Add scissors, tweezers, latex gloves, antiseptic and disinfecting wipes as well. Replenish any items that have expired.

Adhesive Bandages: Choose bandages in various sizes from narrow strips to large pads to cover larger cuts and wounds. Look for waterproof options.

Gauze Pads: Include sterile compressed gauze pads in small, medium and large sizes for covering and protecting wounds.

Rolled Gauze Bandages: Roll gauze is versatile for wrapping sprains, strains and holding other dressings in place. Choose various widths from 1/4 inch to 2 inches.

Medical Tape: Use medical tape to help secure dressings or splints instead of regular adhesive tape which can damage skin when removed.

Antibiotic Ointment: An antibiotic cream or gel like Neosporin is useful for preventing infection in minor cuts and abrasions.

Pain Relievers: Include ibuprofen, acetaminophen or aspirin for sprains, strains, headaches and fever reduction. Always follow dose instructions carefully.

Thermometer: A digital thermometer is essential for determining fevers. Choose a fast-reading oral or forehead thermometer.

Scissors: Add a pair of small medical scissors for sterile cutting of dressings or tape.

Tweezers: Tweezers can be used to remove splinters or tighten dressings. Choose fine-tipped stainless steel tweezers.

Latex Gloves: Vinyl or latex disposable gloves protect against contact with blood or other body fluids during treatment.
